Thank You City Nature Challenge 2024: Brazos Valley Group

Hello Everyone,

I am deeply grateful for the incredible participation you all have shown during the City Nature Challenge observation days! Your contributions have provided us with a remarkable yearly snapshot of the biodiversity in our area. The numbers this year are truly astounding, and I am eagerly anticipating how they will evolve in the coming days as the ID verification process continues.

It's a good time to start identifying some species as the weather looks rai...

Thank You!

I can't thank everyone enough for all the entries that have been made so far this year! We have had an incredible amount of identifications within the park and we are only in May!!! I am extremely excited to see what we are able to gather by the end of 2024.

This Bioblitz will help immensely with our species identification list that I plan to create in 2025.

Keep up the awesome work! From everyone here at Rocky Fork State Park, THANK YOU!!!!

Casting a Wider Net

Temperatures are climbing, and the southeastern woods are ringing with loud cicada choruses! More observations are coming in of holes and nymphs in Brood XIII territory, so they're not far behind their southern cousins. Keep an eye out for the black patches on northern nymphs, which will appear just before they're ready to emerge and undergo their final molt.

In light of all the records coming in, I've broadened the project parameters to include "Needs ID" observations. I hope th...

Welcome!

Welcome to the Witherley and Atterton Flora and Fauna project.
This projecty has been set up to record observations and locations of plants and animals in our villages. This will help us to understand the habitats and biodiversity that we have here and see any trends that may be apparent over time. The project also aims to increase the nature connection of the local community.
Happy observing!

Early May

We've had a big jump in Odonata numbers over the last week.

April is officially our best survey April. Nearly 900 research grade observations, 30 species, 120+ contributors. There will be several new County Records and at least a couple new Early Flight dates.

Only 13 counties did not have observations reported. See the map below. 2024 counties are the darkest. We only have three ciunties now with no April records.

Keep uploading and IDing

I've been seeing many great observations come in for the CNC so keep up the good work! We are now in the upload and ID phase, which means observations can still be uploaded as long as they were taken from Friday to Monday (April 26-29). Also, if you are able to, provide taxonomic identifications to as many observations as you can. The goal is to make most of the observations "Research Grade" so that they are usable for scientific research. We have until May 5th to upload and ID. Results ...

Sessil (Wild Oat) vs Appalachia Bellwort

Look closely at the stem of Uvularia puberula you will notice fine hairs that are not present in U. sessilifolia. Secondly, if you look at the interior of the petals of U. sessifolia you will notice distinct bumps. A third, non-diagnositic characteristic has to do with how much the leaves tend to unfurl before flowering. U. puberula tend to flower when the leaves look just like those seen here (still folded), whereas the leaves of U. sessiofolia are more open. ....

CNC wrap up and ID week

Hi all,

Thank you so much to everyone who has taken part in the City Nature Challenge so far, the weekend was a huge success and the increase in observations from last year has been incredible! So far we have 4326 observations, 903 species, 75 observers and 228 identifiers, compared to 2667 observations, 692 species, 80 observers and 335 identifiers last year. This has contributed to a global total of over 2.1 million observations so far!

But this isn't the end of the Ci...

Tarkennuksia skaban kategorioihin ja lajimääriin / Specifications to the rules on categories and accepted species

In English below

Ainakin hyönteisissä ja sienissä havaintoja on viime a...

Chromolaichma sedna (Marcus & Marcus, 1967) has been split

Hi Everyone,

A recent study, Layton & Wilson 2024, has split Chromolaichma sedna (Marcus & Marcus, 1967):
C. sedna: eastern Pacific
C. hemera: western Atlantic

More over, the authors discover ''extensive phylogeographic structure within C. hemera sp. nov. sensu lato, thereby refuting the hypothesis of a recent introduction'' and found ''significant rate heterogeneity among marine invertebrate genera that share a similar lifespan, reproductive mode and disp...

CNC progress and targets

Hello everyone, it looks like you’ve compiled a nice total so far, we’re at 3,143 observations. Regrettably, I’ve had to be away this year so couldn’t contribute. However, I’ve been doing some identifications when I could. Last year we hit a 70% research grade level, which was pretty good. As far as I could tell, we won the CNC in that measurement (but there’s no recognition for that in the CNC)! We have a ways to go to meet that again, so it’s worth going through the identify model...

Day Six: The Progress Continues

The observations continue to trickle in and the identifications continue to arrive. We added nearly 100 observations today. Laura Sare bumped me from the top spot with 440 observations. Again, I'm happy to cede top spot, particularly to such a worthy "opponent." Our species count is currently at 1,418, just a few over last night's 1,409. That number is going to vary, probably staying in that neighborhood, as IDs are refined and changed over the next few days. Yesterday's post shoul...

Subspecific range map for Common Side-blotched Lizards

I have updated the range map for Uta stansburiana and the five continental subspecies based on some recent work in the field the past couple years. The map can be found as this observation. Some areas of these distributions are still poorly understood, such as much of the non-Baja distribution in Mexico (especially at the subspecific level) and where U.s.elegans, U.s.nevadensis, and ...
